June 15 - December 12, 2019. Theatrical Olympiad in St. Petersburg
In 2019, St. Petersburg will host 11th Theater Olympics. The international project will be the central event of the Year of Theater in Russia.
Theatre Olympics 2019 is a large scale international festival, a venue for development of global theatre integration and dialogue between theatre professionals from around the world.
The Theatre Olympics was first held in 1993. The project was initiated by the famous theatre director Theodoros Terzopoulos. The first Theatre Olympics took place in 1994, in the cradle of global theatre, the Greek city of Delphi.
The founding fathers of the Theatre Olympic movement were the classics of global theatre – directors Theodoros Terzopoulos, Yuri Lyubimov, Heiner Müller, Tadashi Suzuki, and Robert Wilson.
The main idea behind the Theatre Olympics is to bring together various schools of theatre under one banner. During the Theatre Olympics the most irreconcilable of opponents, adherents of often directly opposite views on theatre, come together to present the most comprehensive view on the contemporary theatre.
In various years the Theatre Olympics was held in Greece, Japan, Turkey, South Korea, Poland, and China. The Theatre Olympics is returning to Russia for the second time: in 2001 the event was held in Moscow.
In 2019, for the first time in its history, the Theatre Olympics will be held in two countries at the same time – Russia and Japan. Shows presented by best foreign theatres and national theatres from various Russian regions, as well as lectures and workshops by leading theatre figures will take place in St. Petersburg and in various regions of Russia from June to December.
The international project will be the central event of the Year of Theater in Russia.
The theater marathon will gather more than 30 leading teams from Russia, Europe and Asia. There are performances of famous masters, experimental works of young directors, master classes, creative sessions, conferences and other events in the program. The best productions will be presented by such festivals as the “NET Festival”, “Baltic House Theater-Festival” and “Access Point”.
